Global Entry and NEXUS Photos: What Happens at the Interview
Global Entry does not ask you to upload or bring a photo. A CBP officer takes your photo and fingerprints at the enrollment interview, and that image is used for your membership. NEXUS works the same way with CBP and CBSA officers. PhotoForPass does not sell Global Entry photos, so this guide explains the interview, the $120 fee and what to bring.
Honest answer. We do not sell photos for this document. Here is what to do instead.
This photo is taken in person
No photo is uploaded with the TTP application.
Key takeaways
- There is no Global Entry photo to buy, print or upload. CBP captures it at your interview.
- First-time applicants must attend an in-person interview, either at an enrollment center or through Enrollment on Arrival.
- Renewing members may qualify for a video interview if CBP already has a photo taken within the past 10 years and after age 14.
- You need a valid passport for Global Entry, and that is the one document where you supply your own 2 x 2 photo.

Why there is no Global Entry photo to upload
Global Entry is a biometric program, so CBP collects your photo and fingerprints itself. You fill in the application online through the Trusted Traveler Programs website and pay the fee, but nowhere in that process do you upload a picture.
The photo is taken by a CBP officer at your interview, at the same time as your fingerprints. CBP uses this image to confirm who you are when you use Global Entry kiosks and lanes on arrival in the US. Because the photo has to be captured by CBP equipment under an officer's supervision, a photo from a pharmacy, a studio or an app cannot be used.
That is why PhotoForPass does not sell a 'Global Entry photo'. If you see one advertised, it is a generic 2 x 2 photo that CBP will not ask for. The same applies to NEXUS, which is covered further down this page.
What happens at the Global Entry interview
The interview is short, and the photo is one of the last steps. Here is how the process runs from application to card, based on CBP's Global Entry pages.
- Apply and pay online. Each person submits an individual application and pays the $120 fee at the same time.
- Wait for the background check. CBP says most applications are reviewed within 2 weeks, but some take up to 12 months or longer.
- Get conditional approval and schedule the interview. In-person interviews are required for first-time enrollment.
- Attend the interview. The officer reviews your documents, asks a few questions, then takes your photo and fingerprints.
- Start using your benefits once you are approved.
Enrollment on Arrival
If you have conditional approval, you can skip the appointment and complete the interview when you land from an international trip at a participating airport. Follow the signs to the Enrollment on Arrival booth in the CBP inspection area. Your photo and fingerprints are captured there instead of at an enrollment center.
How to prepare for your Global Entry photo
You have no control over the camera or the background, but you can control how you show up. The photo may stay on your CBP file for years, and it can be reused for a remote renewal later.
- Wear everyday clothes. A solid color that is not white usually photographs best against a light backdrop.
- Plan to remove hats and sunglasses. The officer decides about glasses and head coverings, so follow their directions.
- Keep your face clear. Pull hair away from your eyes and face.
- Arrive on time with your documents ready. Officers keep interviews short, and missing documents can mean rescheduling.

What to bring to your Global Entry interview
CBP checks your documents before it takes your photo, so bring everything on the list. These are the items CBP lists for Enrollment on Arrival and remote interviews, and they are the safe set for any Global Entry interview.
If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before the interview where you can. Your membership is linked to your passport details, and bringing all current passports lets CBP add them to your file.
| Document | Who needs it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport | Everyone | Bring all current passports if you travel on more than one |
| Proof of residency | Adults | Driver's license, mortgage statement, rental payment statement or utility bill; not required for minors |
| Permanent resident card | Lawful permanent residents | Bring the original card |
| Conditional approval | Everyone | Shown in your TTP account; needed before any interview |
Global Entry and NEXUS costs
Both programs cost $120 for adults and run for 5 years. The fee is paid with the application, it does not depend on where you interview, and there is nothing extra to pay for the photo.
Children under 18 pay $0 for Global Entry when a parent or legal guardian is an enrolled member or is applying, for applications received on or after October 1, 2024. For NEXUS, applicants under 18 pay nothing if a parent or legal guardian is also approved in a Trusted Traveler Program.
| Program | Adult fee | Membership | Under 18 | Photo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global Entry | $120 | 5 years | $0 with a member or applying parent or guardian | Taken by CBP at the interview |
| NEXUS | $120, non-refundable | 5 years | $0 if a parent or guardian is approved in a TTP | Taken by CBP or CBSA at the interview |
Renewing remotely: the photo on file rule
When you renew, CBP may not need a new photo at all. Its Remote Interview Pilot lets eligible renewing members finish the interview by video, using the photo already on file.
To qualify, you must have a conditionally approved renewal, be at least 18, have previously given fingerprints to CBP, and have a photo on file that was taken within the past 10 years and after you turned 14. The interview runs on Zoom from a computer, tablet or phone and takes about 15 minutes. You still need your passport, proof of residency and green card if you have one. If your photo is too old or you were under 14 when it was taken, plan for an in-person interview and a new photo.
NEXUS photos work the same way
NEXUS, the joint US and Canada program, also has no photo upload. CBP and CBSA officers take your face photo and fingerprints at the NEXUS interview, including when you use Enrollment on Arrival.
NEXUS costs $120 per adult, is non-refundable and lasts 5 years. Book the interview through your TTP account, and bring the same kind of identity and residency documents you would bring for Global Entry, plus any documents CBSA asks for.
Photos you may actually need: your passport
Global Entry starts with a valid passport, and that is the document where you do supply a photo. If your U.S. passport has expired or is about to, renew it first.
PhotoForPass makes U.S. passport photos and files for online passport renewal from your phone, built to meet State Department requirements. Checks run in your browser before you pay, a digital photo is $16.95, and a digital photo plus a 4 x 6 print sheet is $18.95, with a 14-day money-back guarantee. These photos are for your passport application, not for Global Entry itself.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a photo for my Global Entry application?
No. The Global Entry application has no photo upload, and you do not bring a printed photo to the interview. A CBP officer takes your photo and fingerprints during the interview, either at an enrollment center or through Enrollment on Arrival. That image is stored in your CBP file and used when you enter the US.
Who takes the Global Entry photo?
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer takes your Global Entry photo at the interview, along with your fingerprints. The photo is captured with CBP equipment, so outside photos from a pharmacy, studio or app cannot be used. For NEXUS, the photo is taken by CBP or Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers.
Can I wear glasses in my Global Entry photo?
The CBP officer decides. There is no published Global Entry photo rule for glasses, so the officer may ask you to remove them, especially if they cause glare. Bring your glasses, be ready to take them off for the camera, and follow the officer's directions. The same goes for hats and head coverings.
Does Global Entry renewal need a new photo?
Not always. Under CBP's Remote Interview Pilot, renewing members can finish the interview by video if they are at least 18, have a conditionally approved renewal, have given fingerprints before, and have a photo on file taken within the past 10 years and after age 14. If you do not meet those rules, you attend an in-person interview and CBP takes a new photo.
How much does Global Entry cost?
Global Entry costs $120, paid when you submit your application, and membership lasts 5 years. Children under 18 pay $0 when a parent or legal guardian is an enrolled member or is applying at the same time, for applications received on or after October 1, 2024. There is no separate charge for the photo, which CBP takes at the interview.
What should I bring to my Global Entry interview?
Bring a valid passport, and all current passports if you have more than one. Adults also need proof of residency, such as a driver's license, mortgage statement, rental payment statement or utility bill. Lawful permanent residents should bring their permanent resident card. You need conditional approval in your Trusted Traveler Programs account before any interview.
What is Global Entry Enrollment on Arrival?
Enrollment on Arrival lets conditionally approved Global Entry applicants complete the interview when they land from an international trip, without a scheduled appointment. After landing, go to the Enrollment on Arrival booth in the CBP inspection area. The officer checks your documents and takes your photo and fingerprints there, just as at an enrollment center.
Does NEXUS need a photo?
NEXUS does not need a photo from you. CBP and CBSA officers take your face photo and fingerprints at the NEXUS interview, including Enrollment on Arrival, and the application has no photo upload. NEXUS costs $120 per adult, lasts 5 years, and applicants under 18 pay nothing if a parent or guardian is approved in a Trusted Traveler Program.
Is my Global Entry photo the same as my passport photo?
No. Your Global Entry photo is taken separately by CBP at your interview, while your passport photo is a 2 x 2 inch photo you supply with your passport application. You do need a valid passport to join Global Entry, so if yours has expired, renew it first. PhotoForPass can make the passport photo, but not the Global Entry photo.
Can I use my Global Entry card instead of a REAL ID?
Yes. TSA accepts DHS trusted traveler cards, including Global Entry and NEXUS cards, as identification at airport security for domestic flights. That means a Global Entry card can stand in for a REAL ID at the checkpoint. Our REAL ID photo guide explains how the DMV handles the REAL ID photo if you want one anyway.
