Work Permit Photo Requirements for Form I-765 (EAD)
A work permit photo for Form I-765 is a 2 x 2 inch color print on a white to off-white background, with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall and the eyes 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom. The instructions ask for two identical, unretouched EAD photos with your name and A-Number written lightly on the back. PhotoForPass makes a print-ready sheet from a phone photo in about a minute.

I-765 photo requirements
USCIS lists the photo rules for Form I-765 in the Required Documentation part of the instructions, under Photographs. They match the passport-style rules on other USCIS forms, so one good 2 x 2 photo works for your whole package.
Two details are left open. The instructions do not mention glasses, so take them off to match the U.S. Department of State photo standards. They ask for photos 'taken recently' without a set number of days, so take new photos for each application, renewals included.

How many EAD photos you need
Every Form I-765 needs its own two identical photos, and every person needs their own set. Count photos per form, per person, before you print.
A common case: one person filing Form I-485, Form I-765 and Form I-131 for advance parole together needs six identical photos, two for each form. A single 4x6 sheet printed borderless holds exactly six 2 x 2 photos. For DACA, the two photos go with the I-765 that every Form I-821D request must include; see the DACA photo guide. For the green card side of the package, see the green card photo guide.
| Filing | Photos |
|---|---|
| Initial EAD on its own | 2 identical |
| Renewal or replacement EAD | 2 identical |
| I-765 filed with Form I-485 | 2 for the I-765, plus 2 for the I-485 |
| I-765, I-485 and I-131 advance parole together | 6 in total, 2 per form |
| I-765 filed with Form I-821D (DACA) | 2 for the I-765; Form I-821D lists none |
Your EAD card photo and the December 2025 USCIS policy
The photos you mail and the photo printed on your work permit are not always the same picture. In Policy Alert PA-2025-29, dated December 12, 2025, USCIS said it will not use or reuse self-submitted photographs, and its news alert added that only photos taken by USCIS or other authorized entities will be used to make immigration documents.
For Form I-765, USCIS may reuse a photo taken at one of your earlier biometrics appointments if no more than 36 months have passed at the time of filing. Otherwise, or whenever it decides it wants a new photo, USCIS sends a notice to visit an Application Support Center.
The Form I-765 instructions still list two passport-style photos, and the USCIS I-765 page still reminds filers that submitted photos must be unmounted and unretouched. So include the photos the instructions ask for, and watch your mail and online account for a biometrics notice. USCIS says it may deny an application if you skip a required biometrics appointment.
Online or paper filing: digital vs printed photos
How you file decides what kind of photo you need. Paper filings need prints, and online filings follow the evidence screens in your USCIS account.
Filing on paper
Mail two identical prints on thin glossy photo paper. A JPG on its own, a photocopy or a printout on office paper does not meet the instructions.
Filing online
Many categories can file Form I-765 through a USCIS online account. Follow the evidence screens you see. If they ask for a passport-style photo, upload a digital file that meets the same 2 x 2 rules; our Digital photo for $16.95 is made for that. USCIS may still call you to biometrics for the card photo.
Renewing your work permit
USCIS generally recommends filing a renewal up to 180 days before your current EAD expires, though some categories have their own timing. A renewal follows the same photo rules, so take new photos instead of reusing prints from your last application.
EAD photo mistakes that cause RFEs or delays
Missing or unusable photos can lead to a request for evidence (RFE) or a biometrics notice, and either one adds weeks. Check for these before you seal the envelope.
- Retouched or filtered photos. USCIS says submitted photos must be unretouched, meaning not edited or digitally enhanced, and that mounted or retouched photos delay processing and may lead to an ASC visit to verify your identity.
- Mounted photos. Do not glue photos to paper or staple through them.
- Photos that are not identical. Two different selfies do not make a matching pair.
- Head too small or too large. It must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches from hair to chin.
- A busy or dark background. Use white to off-white with no shadows or objects.
- Glasses, hats or earbuds. Remove them; religious headwear is fine when your religion requires it.
- Old photos. Prints from a previous filing may no longer look like you.
- No name on the back. Unlabeled photos are hard to match to your file if they come loose.

How to label and attach your work permit photos
Labeling takes one minute and keeps your photos tied to your case.
- Use a pencil or felt pen, as the instructions say, not a ballpoint pressed hard.
- Lightly print your full name and A-Number, if you have one, on the back of each photo.
- Let ink dry so it does not transfer to the other photo.
- Keep the photos loose and unmounted. USCIS does not prescribe a holder, so many filers put them in a small envelope marked with their name and 'Form I-765 photos' and paper clip it to the front of the form.
- If you file several forms, keep each pair of photos with its own form.
How PhotoForPass makes your EAD photos
PhotoForPass gives you studio-style EAD photos without the trip to the store. You take one photo with your phone, and we prepare it to the Form I-765 measurements.
- Smart check before you pay. Face size, centering, tilt, eyes, lighting, shadows, blur and background are checked in your browser. Your photo stays on your device until you pay.
- Fixed and sized to USCIS rules. After payment, we fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white and crop to exactly 2 x 2 inches with your head and eyes inside the USCIS ranges. Your face is never changed: no smoothing, no reshaping, no filters. A photo taken in soft daylight against a light wall needs the least correction.
- Print-ready sheet. Photo + print sheet costs $18.95 and includes the digital JPG plus a 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF, ready in 30 to 60 seconds. Printed borderless, it gives six identical photos for your I-765, I-485 and I-131.
- Families. Family packs cover 2 people for $29.95 or 3 people for $39.95.
Every order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked, and a full refund if the agency rejects the photo. PhotoForPass is not affiliated with USCIS, and final acceptance is up to USCIS.
How to take a work permit photo at home
About 2 minutes
-
Step 1: Set up by a window
Face a window in daylight and stand about 2 feet in front of a plain white or light wall. Avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under your eyes.
-
Step 2: Get ready
Remove glasses, hats and earbuds. Keep religious headwear only if your religion requires it. Pull hair back from your face.
-
Step 3: Take the photo
Have someone hold the phone at eye level about 4 feet away. Look straight into the camera, keep your head level and your expression neutral, and take a few shots.
-
Step 4: Check and size it
Upload the sharpest shot to PhotoForPass. After the browser check, we crop it to 2 x 2 inches with the USCIS head and eye ranges on a plain white background.
-
Step 5: Print, cut and label
Print the 4x6 sheet on glossy photo paper, cut two photos to exactly 2 x 2 inches and lightly write your name and A-Number on the back in pencil or felt pen.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What size is a work permit photo?
A work permit photo for Form I-765 is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in color. The head must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, and the eyes must sit 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches above the bottom of the photo. The background must be white to off-white, and the print must be on thin glossy paper.
How many photos do I need for Form I-765?
Form I-765 asks for two identical color passport-style photos of yourself taken recently. Each person files their own I-765 and needs their own two photos. If you file Form I-485 or Form I-131 at the same time, those forms need their own photos too, so one person filing all three needs six identical photos.
Do I need photos to renew my work permit?
Yes, if you follow the current Form I-765 instructions. The photo requirement sits in the Required Documentation section, which applies to all applications, including renewals and replacements. USCIS generally recommends filing a renewal up to 180 days before your EAD expires. Take new photos rather than reusing prints from your last filing, since they must be taken recently.
Do I need photos if I file Form I-765 online?
When you file Form I-765 online, follow the evidence screens in your USCIS account. If they ask for a passport-style photo, upload a digital file that meets the same 2 x 2 inch rules. Under a December 12, 2025 USCIS policy, the photo on your card comes from a biometrics appointment or from a USCIS photo taken within the last 36 months, so watch for a biometrics notice too.
Will USCIS use my mailed photos on my EAD card?
Probably not. USCIS Policy Alert PA-2025-29, dated December 12, 2025, says USCIS will not use or reuse self-submitted photographs to make immigration documents. For Form I-765, it may reuse a photo taken at your earlier biometrics appointment if it is no more than 36 months old at filing, or it will ask you to visit an Application Support Center. The instructions still ask you to mail two photos.
What do I write on the back of EAD photos?
Lightly print your full name and your A-Number, if you have one, on the back of each EAD photo with a pencil or felt pen. That is the wording in the Form I-765 instructions. Press gently so the writing does not dent the front, and let felt pen ink dry before you stack the photos together.
Can I wear glasses in my EAD photo?
The Form I-765 instructions do not mention glasses. USCIS points to U.S. Department of State photo specifications, which do not allow glasses except in rare medical cases. Take your glasses off for your work permit photos to avoid a request for new ones. If you must wear them for a medical reason, make sure there is no glare on the lenses and your eyes are fully visible.
Can I smile in my work permit photo?
USCIS asks for a full face, frontal view and does not describe expressions in detail. The safest choice for an EAD photo is a neutral expression or a slight, natural closed-mouth smile, with both eyes open and your head straight. Avoid a wide grin, squinting or tilting your head.
Do I need separate photos for Form I-765 and Form I-485?
Yes. Form I-485 and Form I-765 each ask for two identical passport-style photos, so a combined filing needs four, and six if you add Form I-131 for advance parole. All of them can come from the same shot. A single 4x6 sheet printed borderless gives six identical 2 x 2 photos, enough for all three forms.
Can I take my EAD photo at home?
Yes. USCIS does not require a professional studio for passport-style photos. Take the photo with your phone in daylight against a plain light wall, then use PhotoForPass to crop it to 2 x 2 inches with the USCIS head and eye positions and a plain white background. Print the sheet on glossy photo paper and cut two identical photos.
Can I print my work permit photos at CVS or Walgreens?
Yes. Order the 4x6 print sheet from PhotoForPass, then print it as a regular 4x6 photo on glossy paper at a CVS, Walgreens or Walmart photo counter, or on a home photo printer. Choose borderless printing to get six 2 x 2 photos, and do not let the store resize or crop the image.
What does unretouched mean for USCIS photos?
On its Form I-765 page, USCIS says unretouched means the photos must not be edited or digitally enhanced. It warns that mounted or retouched photos will delay processing and may lead USCIS to require an Application Support Center visit to verify your identity. Avoid beauty filters, skin smoothing and any change to your facial features.
Can I wear a hijab or turban in my I-765 photo?
Yes, if your religious denomination requires it. The Form I-765 instructions say your head must be bare unless you wear headwear required by your religion. Keep your whole face clearly visible, with no shadows across it. Caps, hats and scarves worn for style are not allowed in a work permit photo.
What happens if my I-765 photos are wrong?
USCIS may send a request for evidence asking for new photos, or a notice to visit an Application Support Center, and either one adds time before you receive your work permit. If PhotoForPass photos are rejected by the agency, you get a full refund, and every order also has a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked.
How much do EAD photos from PhotoForPass cost?
A digital photo costs $16.95, which suits online filings that ask for an upload. Photo + print sheet costs $18.95 and adds a 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF with six identical 2 x 2 photos when printed borderless. Family packs cost $29.95 for 2 people or $39.95 for 3. It is a one-time payment with no subscription.
