Pakistani passport from the US
Pakistan Passport Photo Requirements for Online Renewal and Prints
A Pakistan passport photo must be 35 x 45 mm with a head height of 29 to 34 mm, on a plain white background, taken within the last 6 months. For DGIP online passport renewal, the file must be a JPG or PNG of 20 KB or less. PhotoForPass makes that small file and a 35 x 45 mm print sheet from a phone photo in about a minute.
- 14-day money-back guarantee
- Photo stays on your device until you pay
- Checked against official rules
Key takeaways
- The DGIP online renewal portal caps the photo at 20 KB, far smaller than a normal phone photo. Most rejected uploads are simply too big.
- Other DGIP e-services, such as newborn or modification requests, use a 350 x 467 pixel JPEG of up to 3 MB.
- Printed photos are 35 x 45 mm with a 29 to 34 mm head, on plain white, professionally taken.
- NICOP and other NADRA cards have their own photo rules. This page covers the Pakistani passport only.

The DGIP renewal page gives a file size limit but no pixel size. PhotoForPass uses 350 x 467 pixels, the size listed for other DGIP e-services, and compresses the file to 20 KB or less for renewal.

Renewing a Pakistan passport from the US: the 20 KB photo rule
Many Pakistanis living in the US renew their passport online on the DGIP portal (onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk). The photo upload is the step that trips up most applicants, because the limit is tiny.
Why 20 KB is hard
A photo from a modern phone is usually 2 to 5 MB, or 100 to 250 times the DGIP renewal limit. Shrinking it with a generic tool often leaves a blurry, blocky face or a file that is still over 20 KB. The photo also has to stay sharp enough for the face, eyes and background to pass review.
Must not be edited in software
The DGIP renewal page says the photo must not be edited in software. Start with a sharp, well-lit photo against a plain white wall so it needs as little change as possible, and never use beauty filters or face retouching.
Other DGIP services and NICOP
Other DGIP e-services, such as newborn passports, reprints and modifications, ask for a 350 x 467 pixel color photo on white, up to 3 MB. NICOP and other NADRA identity cards are separate applications with their own photo rules, so check NADRA's instructions for those.
Digital vs printed Pakistan passport photos from PhotoForPass
Every Pakistan order is built for online renewal first, with prints as an option. You do not have to compress anything yourself.
- Digital photo ($16.95): a 350 x 467 pixel JPG on white, compressed to 20 KB or less for DGIP online renewal. The same file works for DGIP e-services that accept up to 3 MB.
- Photo + print sheet ($18.95): the same digital file plus a print-ready 4 x 6 inch sheet (JPG and PDF) with 8 photos at 35 x 45 mm. Print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart and cut along the guides.
DGIP says printed photos must be professionally taken and not cut down from a larger picture. Our sheet prints each photo at exactly 35 x 45 mm, so you only cut along the guides. Order it as a glossy or matte 4 x 6 photo print, not a home print on plain paper.
Why Pakistan passport photos get rejected
Most rejections come from file size and a few common capture mistakes. Check these before you upload to the DGIP portal or print.
- File over 20 KB. The renewal portal refuses anything larger.
- Blurry or blocky after compression. Over-compressing a large photo can make the face unreadable.
- Background not plain white. Gray, cream or patterned walls, or shadows behind you.
- Head too small or too big. The head must measure 29 to 34 mm from chin to crown on the print.
- Glasses with glare or tint. Reflections on lenses, tinted lenses or frames over the eyes. Removing glasses is the safest choice.
- Expression. Smiling, open mouth or closed eyes.
- Other people or objects. Only you in the photo, with your full head and shoulders.
- Red-eye or shadows. Use soft, even light instead of a direct flash.
- Edited photos. Filters, retouching or face reshaping apps.
Pakistan passport photos for babies and children
Children follow the same core rules: plain white background, face clearly visible, only the child in the photo. A newborn passport goes through DGIP e-services, which use the 350 x 467 pixel photo of up to 3 MB.
For a baby, lay them on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above, with the phone parallel to the face. Keep hands, toys and blankets with patterns out of view, and take several shots so you can pick one with the eyes open and the face straight.
How PhotoForPass makes your Pakistan passport photo
PhotoForPass handles the size and compression problem for you. You take or upload a photo on any phone or computer, and our checks run in your browser before you pay, so your photo stays on your device until then.
We check face position, head size, eyes, lighting, shadows and background against the DGIP rules, fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white, and size and crop the photo to 35 x 45 mm and to a 20 KB online file. Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, and files are ready about 30 to 60 seconds after payment.
Final acceptance is always up to DGIP. If your photo is rejected, our 14-day money-back guarantee gives you a full refund. Photos are deleted automatically after 90 days, or anytime from My photos.
How to take a Pakistan passport photo at home
About 5 minutes
-
Step 1: Use a plain white wall
Stand about one step in front of a plain white wall with no frames, doors or patterns behind you.
-
Step 2: Light your face evenly
Face a window or a soft light so there are no shadows on your face or the wall. Avoid direct flash, which causes red-eye and glare.
-
Step 3: Remove glasses and clear your face
Take off glasses, push hair away from your eyes, and make sure nothing covers your face.
-
Step 4: Position the camera
Have someone hold the phone at your eye level about 1.5 m (5 ft) away, using the rear camera. Include your full head and shoulders.
-
Step 5: Keep a neutral expression
Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed and eyes open. Keep your head level and centered.
-
Step 6: Check and download
Upload the photo to PhotoForPass, review the checks, then download the 20 KB file for DGIP online renewal and the 35 x 45 mm print sheet if you need it.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Pakistan passport photo?
A printed Pakistan passport photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, with a head height of 29 to 34 mm from chin to the top of the head. It must be on a plain white background, professionally taken, and not cut down from a larger picture. For DGIP online renewal, the digital file must be 20 KB or less.
What is the photo size limit for Pakistan online passport renewal?
The DGIP online passport renewal portal accepts JPG or PNG photos up to 20 KB. It does not state a pixel size. PhotoForPass uses 350 x 467 pixels, the size listed for other DGIP e-services, and compresses the file to 20 KB or less while keeping the face sharp.
How do I reduce my photo to 20 KB for Pakistan passport renewal?
A phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, so it needs heavy resizing and compression to get under 20 KB. Doing it by hand often leaves a blurry face. PhotoForPass sizes the photo to 350 x 467 pixels and compresses it to 20 KB or less for you, ready to upload to the DGIP portal.
What background color is required for a Pakistan passport photo?
A Pakistan passport photo needs a plain white background with no shadows, patterns or objects. Cream, gray or blue backgrounds can be rejected. PhotoForPass replaces the background with plain white for both the 20 KB online file and the 35 x 45 mm prints.
Can I wear glasses in a Pakistan passport photo?
Glasses are allowed only if your eyes are clearly visible, with no reflection or glare on the lenses. Sunglasses and tinted glasses are not allowed, and frames must not cover your eyes. Glare is the most common problem, so the safest choice is to take your glasses off for a Pakistan passport photo.
Can you smile in a Pakistan passport photo?
No. DGIP asks for a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open, facing forward. A wide smile or open mouth can lead to a rejection. Relax your face, close your lips and look straight at the camera, with your head level and not tilted.
How recent must a Pakistan passport photo be?
A Pakistan passport photo must be no more than 6 months old and should match how you look now. Do not reuse a photo from an old passport or another application. PhotoForPass makes a new photo from a picture you take today.
What photo size do other DGIP e-services need?
Other DGIP e-services, such as newborn passports, reprints and modifications, ask for a color picture on a white background at 350 x 467 pixels, as a JPEG of up to 3 MB. The PhotoForPass digital file uses 350 x 467 pixels on white, so it also fits these services.
Is the NICOP photo the same as the Pakistan passport photo?
No. NICOP and other identity cards are issued by NADRA, not DGIP, and they have their own photo rules. This page covers the Pakistan passport only. Check NADRA's current instructions before you take a photo for a NICOP or any other NADRA card application.
Can I take a Pakistan passport photo at home with my phone?
Yes. Stand in front of a plain white wall in soft, even light, remove glasses, and have someone take the photo at eye level with the rear camera. PhotoForPass checks it against the DGIP rules, then prepares the 20 KB online renewal file and a 35 x 45 mm print sheet.
How many photos per sheet do I get for a Pakistan passport?
The PhotoForPass print sheet is a 4 x 6 inch photo print with 8 photos at 35 x 45 mm. You can print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart, or at home on photo paper, and cut along the guides. One sheet covers most applications that ask for printed photos.
What if DGIP rejects my Pakistan passport photo?
If DGIP rejects the photo, you will need to upload a new one, which can delay your renewal. Final acceptance is always up to DGIP. With PhotoForPass you can make a new version with one of your 3 free redos, or claim a full refund under our 14-day money-back guarantee.
