Indian e-Visa and regular visa
India Visa Photo Requirements for e-Visa and Regular Visa
An India visa photo is square. For the e-Visa, upload a JPEG of 10 KB to 1 MB on a plain white or light background, with no glasses. For a regular visa, the JPEG must be 10 to 300 KB and 350 x 350 to 1000 x 1000 pixels. Printed copies are 2 x 2 inches. PhotoForPass makes one 600 x 600 file that fits both, plus prints.

- Photo stays on your device until you pay
- Checked against official rules
Key takeaways
- The India visa photo is square, not the 630 x 810 portrait shape used for Indian passports.
- The e-Visa accepts a JPEG of 10 KB to 1 MB. The regular visa upload is stricter: 10 to 300 KB and 350 to 1000 pixels on each side.
- A 600 x 600 pixel file under 300 KB meets both, so you do not need two versions.
- Glasses are not allowed, and the background must be plain white or light with no border.

India visa photo requirements: e-Visa vs regular visa
India uses two online systems for visas, and both ask for a square digital photo. The e-Visa portal covers the visa types available online, and the regular visa application covers the rest, with documents submitted afterward as instructed for your jurisdiction.
The rules for the face are almost the same. The difference is the file: the regular visa upload has tighter file size and pixel limits. The table compares them.
| Requirement | e-Visa | Regular visa |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Square | Square |
| Format | JPEG | JPEG |
| File size | 10 KB to 1 MB | 10 KB to 300 KB |
| Pixel size | Not stated | 350 x 350 to 1000 x 1000 px |
| Background | Plain light-colored or white, no border | Plain light or white |
| Head | Centered, full head from top of hair to bottom of chin | Full face, front view |
| Glasses | Not allowed | Remove them |
| Shadows | None on the face or background | None |
| Printed copies | Not needed for the upload | 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) if your checklist asks |
One 600 x 600 file for every India visa upload
You do not need to know in advance which system will accept your photo. A square JPEG of 600 x 600 pixels and no more than 300 KB sits inside the limits of both.
The e-Visa page states no pixel range at all, only the 10 KB to 1 MB file size. The 350 to 1000 pixel range comes from the regular visa upload instructions. Exporting at 600 x 600 keeps the image sharp and well inside both ranges, and keeping it at 300 KB or less satisfies the stricter regular visa limit.
What about head size?
The e-Visa page only says to center the head and show the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin. VFS Global photo specifications for India visas in the US describe a head of about 1 to 1 3/8 inches on a 2 x 2 inch photo, which is 50 to 69% of the height. We could read that VFS sheet only through a search extract, so we treat it as a target, not an official limit.
India visa photo vs Indian passport photo
These two photos are often confused, and using the wrong one is a common reason for a failed upload. The visa photo is for foreign nationals, including US citizens, who need a visa to visit India. The passport photo is for Indian citizens renewing or applying for a passport.
| Feature | India visa photo | Indian passport photo |
|---|---|---|
| Who needs it | Foreign nationals applying for an Indian visa | Indian citizens applying through a mission abroad |
| Shape | Square | Portrait, 7:9 |
| Digital size | 350 to 1000 px square (our file: 600 x 600) | Exactly 630 x 810 px |
| File size | Up to 1 MB (e-Visa) or 300 KB (regular) | Up to 250 KB |
| Face size | Full head, about 50 to 69% of the height | Face 80 to 85% of the photo |
| Print size | 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) | 35 x 45 mm on the 2026 VFS USA adult checklist |
Why India e-Visa photo uploads fail
When the portal refuses a photo, the cause is usually the file or the background. Check these points before you upload.
- File too big. Phone photos are often 2 to 5 MB. The e-Visa limit is 1 MB and the regular visa limit is 300 KB.
- Not square. A portrait or landscape photo gets cropped badly or refused.
- Glasses on. The e-Visa rule is a photo without spectacles.
- Shadows or a dark wall. The background must be plain white or light, with no shadows on the face or behind you.
- Borders. A white frame added by an editing app counts as a border and is not allowed.
- Head cut off. The full head must show, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.
- Wrong photo type. A 630 x 810 Indian passport photo or a tightly cropped selfie will not match the square visa format.
The passport bio page is a separate upload, as a PDF of 10 to 300 KB. Do not upload it in the photo field.
How PhotoForPass makes your India visa photo
PhotoForPass turns one phone photo into an India visa photo that fits both upload systems. Checks run in your browser before you pay, so your photo stays on your device until then.
We check face position, eyes, lighting, shadows and background against the India visa rules. Then we fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white, center your full head in a square crop, and save a 600 x 600 JPEG at 300 KB or less.
- Digital photo ($16.95): the 600 x 600 JPEG for the e-Visa or regular visa upload.
- Photo + print sheet ($18.95): the same file plus a print-ready 4 x 6 inch sheet (JPG and PDF) of 2 x 2 inch photos: 6 borderless or 2 with cut guides. Print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart.
Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, and files are ready about 30 to 60 seconds after payment. Final acceptance is up to the Indian visa authorities. If your photo is rejected, our 14-day money-back guarantee gives you a full refund.

-
Step 6: Upload and download
Upload the photo to PhotoForPass, review the checks, then download the 600 x 600 JPEG for the portal and the 2 x 2 print sheet if your checklist needs prints.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What size is an India visa photo?
An India visa photo is square. The digital upload is a JPEG of 10 KB to 1 MB for the e-Visa, or 10 to 300 KB and 350 x 350 to 1000 x 1000 pixels for a regular visa. Where printed photos are needed, they are 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). A 600 x 600 pixel file under 300 KB meets both online systems.
What are the India e-Visa photo requirements?
The India e-Visa photo must be a square JPEG of 10 KB to 1 MB, showing your full face from the front with your head centered, from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin. The background must be plain white or light, with no shadows and no border. Glasses are not allowed.
What pixel size should an India e-Visa photo be?
The India e-Visa page does not state a pixel size, only a square shape and a file size of 10 KB to 1 MB. The regular visa instructions allow 350 x 350 to 1000 x 1000 pixels. A 600 x 600 pixel JPEG is a safe choice for both, and it keeps the photo sharp without making the file too large.
Can I wear glasses in an India visa photo?
No. The India e-Visa rules ask for a photo without spectacles, so take your glasses off before the photo is taken. Tinted lenses and frames that hide the eyes are a common reason for refused uploads. You can put your glasses back on as soon as the photo is done.
What background is required for an India visa photo?
An India visa photo needs a plain white or light-colored background with no shadows on the face or behind the head. Patterns, furniture and borders are not allowed. PhotoForPass replaces the background with plain white, but standing in front of a light wall gives the cleanest edges around your hair.
Why does my India e-Visa photo upload keep failing?
An India e-Visa photo upload usually fails because the file is over 1 MB, the image is not square, or the background is dark or shadowed. Glasses, a white border added by an app, or a cut-off head also cause refusals. Save a square JPEG of about 600 x 600 pixels under 300 KB to stay within every limit.
Do I need printed photos for an Indian visa?
For the India e-Visa, no: you only upload a digital photo. For a regular visa, check the checklist for your visa type and jurisdiction, which may ask for printed photos. When prints are needed, they are 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) on a plain white or light background.
Is an India visa photo the same as an Indian passport photo?
No. The India visa photo is square, with a printed size of 2 x 2 inches. The Indian passport photo for applications abroad is a 630 x 810 pixel portrait with the face filling 80 to 85% of the frame, and its prints are 35 x 45 mm. Use the visa format for visas and the passport format for passports.
Is the OCI photo the same as the India visa photo?
Not necessarily. An OCI card application has its own photo upload rules on the OCI portal, separate from the visa rules on this page. Check the current OCI instructions before you take the photo, and use them if they differ from the visa requirements.
How recent does an India visa photo need to be?
The India visa portals ask for a recent photo but do not give an exact limit. We recommend a photo taken within the last 6 months that matches how you look now, including your hairstyle and facial hair. An older photo can cause problems when your face is compared at arrival.
Can I take an India visa photo with my phone?
Yes. You can take an India visa photo at home with a phone if the background is plain and light, the lighting is even and you are not wearing glasses. Ask someone to take it at eye level rather than holding the phone at arm's length. PhotoForPass then checks it and prepares the square file.
