Irish Passport Photo Requirements for Passport Online and Paper Forms
An Irish passport photo for Passport Online must be a color JPEG of at least 715 x 951 pixels and up to 9 MB, showing your head to mid-torso, taken by someone else within the last 6 months. Paper forms need 4 identical prints between 35 x 45 mm and 38 x 50 mm. PhotoForPass prepares the uncropped digital file and a 35 x 45 mm print sheet.
- 14-day money-back guarantee
- Photo stays on your device until you pay

Irish passport photo requirements at a glance
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) sets one standard for your face and two formats: a digital photo for Passport Online and printed photos for paper forms. The table shows both, based on the official photo guidelines on ireland.ie.
The current guidelines do not give a head size in millimeters. Older DFA guidance and the EU ICAO guideline use a face that fills about 70 to 80% of the printed photo, and that is what we use for the 35 x 45 mm print.
| Requirement | Digital photo (Passport Online) | Printed photo (paper form) |
|---|---|---|
| Size | At least 715 x 951 pixels | 35 x 45 mm minimum, 38 x 50 mm maximum |
| File | Color JPEG, up to 9 MB, not scanned | Plain white, unglazed back |
| Framing | Head to mid-torso, uncropped | Head to mid-torso with space around head and shoulders |
| Background | Plain light gray, white or cream | Same |
| Color | Color only | Color accepted, black and white recommended |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed, no smile, no head tilt | Same |
| Edits | Not digitally enhanced, no compression artifacts | No red-eye |
| Who takes it | Someone else, no selfies, no smartphone zoom | Not specified |
| Recency | Within the last 6 months | Within the last 6 months |
| How many | 1 digital photo | 4 identical prints |
Applying for an Irish passport from the US: the online photo rules
Most Irish citizens living in the US can renew through Passport Online, so the digital photo is usually the one that matters. It has stricter capture rules than most passport photos, and knowing them up front saves a rejected application.
No selfies, no zoom
The DFA online photo guidelines say the photo must be taken by someone else, not as a selfie, and without using smartphone zoom. Ask a friend or family member to stand back and use the rear camera at normal zoom. A selfie taken at arm's length distorts the face and is one of the most common reasons for a failed upload.
Do not crop it
Passport Online wants your head down to mid-torso, and the system does the cropping. A tight, head-only crop, like a US 2 x 2 photo, is the wrong format here. PhotoForPass delivers an uncropped file at 1080 x 1440 pixels with loose head to mid-torso framing, well above the 715 x 951 minimum.
No enhancement
The photo must not be digitally enhanced, scanned or heavily compressed. Start with a sharp, well-lit photo against a plain light wall so the image needs as little change as possible.
Paper forms
If you apply on paper, you need 4 identical prints. Your witness signs and stamps 2 of them and writes the form number on them. The back of each print must be white and unglazed.
Digital vs printed Irish passport photos from PhotoForPass
Every Irish order is prepared for both routes, so you can switch from online to paper without starting over. The digital file comes first, and the print sheet is optional.
- Digital photo ($16.95): an uncropped color JPG for Passport Online, 1080 x 1440 pixels, head to mid-torso, well under the 9 MB limit.
- Photo + print sheet ($18.95): the same digital file plus a print-ready 4 x 6 inch sheet (JPG and PDF) with 8 photos at 35 x 45 mm, enough for the 4 prints a paper form needs. Print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart and cut along the guides.
The DFA recommends black and white for paper photos but also accepts color. Our sheet is in color. Ask for a standard glossy or matte 4 x 6 photo print with a plain white back, not a home print on plain paper.
Why Irish passport photos get rejected
Most rejections come from a few capture mistakes. Check this list before you upload or mail your photos.
- Selfies. Photos taken at arm's length by the applicant. Someone else must take the photo.
- Smartphone zoom or a wide-angle lens. Both cause distortion, which the DFA calls barrel distortion.
- Cropped too tight. A head-only photo instead of head to mid-torso.
- Background objects. Door panels, plants, shadows or patterns behind you.
- Smiling. The DFA asks for a neutral expression with no smile and the mouth closed.
- Glasses with glare. Clear glasses are fine, but no glare, shadows, or frames over the eyes. No sunglasses.
- Uniforms or insignia. Wear everyday clothes with no badges or logos.
- Enhanced or scanned images. Filters, beauty modes, scanned prints and heavy compression are not accepted.
- Head coverings. Allowed only for religious or medical reasons, with the full face visible. No other head accessories.
Irish passport photos for babies and children
Children follow the same rules, with a few practical allowances. The child must be alone, with no hands or arms visible and no soother or pacifier.
Infants who cannot support themselves should lie on a plain white surface, photographed from above with the phone parallel to the face. Passport Online also has a cropping tool for children aged 0 to 36 months, which helps when a baby will not stay centered.
How PhotoForPass makes your Irish passport photo
PhotoForPass is built around the DFA rules, including the uncropped online format. You upload a photo taken by someone else on any phone or computer, and our checks run in your browser before you pay, so your photo stays on your device until then.
We check face position, eyes, expression, lighting, shadows and background against the Irish rules, even out the lighting, give you a plain light background, and frame the photo for each format: an uncropped digital file and a 35 x 45 mm print sheet. Because the DFA does not accept enhanced images, start with a sharp photo against a plain light wall so it needs as little change as possible. Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, and files are ready about 30 to 60 seconds after payment.
Final acceptance is always up to the Passport Service. If your photo is rejected, our 14-day money-back guarantee gives you a full refund. Photos are deleted automatically after 90 days, or anytime from My photos, and are never sold.
How to take an Irish passport photo at home
About 5 minutes
-
Step 1: Find a plain light wall
Stand about one step in front of a plain light gray, white or cream wall with no door panels, plants or frames behind you.
-
Step 2: Use soft, even light
Face a window or soft light so there are no shadows on your face or on the wall. Avoid harsh overhead light.
-
Step 3: Have someone else take it
Passport Online does not accept selfies. Ask another person to hold the phone at your eye level about 1.5 m (5 ft) away, using the rear camera with no zoom.
-
Step 4: Frame head to mid-torso
Include your head, shoulders and body down to mid-torso, with space around them. Do not crop: the online system crops the photo for you.
-
Step 5: Keep a neutral expression
Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed and no smile. Keep your head level and hair away from your eyes.
-
Step 6: Check and download
Upload the photo to PhotoForPass, review the checks, then download the uncropped file for Passport Online and the 35 x 45 mm print sheet if you need it.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are the Irish passport photo requirements for Passport Online?
Passport Online needs a color JPEG of at least 715 x 951 pixels and up to 9 MB. It must show your head to mid-torso, uncropped, on a plain light gray, white or cream background. The photo must be taken by someone else, without smartphone zoom, within the last 6 months, and it must not be scanned or digitally enhanced.
What size is an Irish passport photo for a paper form?
Printed Irish passport photos must be at least 35 x 45 mm and no larger than 38 x 50 mm. They should show your head to mid-torso with space between your head and shoulders and the edge. Paper forms need 4 identical photos, and the back of each print must be white and unglazed.
Can I take a selfie for my Irish passport photo?
No. The DFA online photo guidelines say the photo must be taken by someone else, not as a selfie, and without smartphone zoom. Selfies taken at arm's length distort the face. Ask a friend to take the photo with the rear camera from about 1.5 m (5 ft) away, then upload it to PhotoForPass for checking.
Is there an Irish passport photo app?
Passport Online accepts a digital photo you take yourself with a phone, as long as someone else takes it and it meets the DFA rules. PhotoForPass works in your phone browser with no app to install. It checks your photo against the Irish rules and prepares an uncropped file for Passport Online plus 35 x 45 mm prints for paper forms.
Should I crop my digital Irish passport photo?
No. Passport Online wants your head to mid-torso and crops the photo itself. A tight head-only crop can be rejected. PhotoForPass delivers an uncropped 1080 x 1440 pixel file with loose framing for the online route, and a separate 35 x 45 mm version for printed photos.
Can you smile in an Irish passport photo?
No. The DFA asks for a neutral expression with your mouth closed and no smile. Your head should not be tilted, and you should look straight into the camera. A natural smile that is fine for a US passport can cause a rejection for an Irish passport.
Can I wear glasses in an Irish passport photo?
Yes, if they are transparent. There must be no glare or shadow on the lenses, and the frames must not cover any part of your eyes. Sunglasses and dark glasses are not allowed. If your glasses reflect light easily, the safest choice is to take them off for the photo.
Do Irish passport photos have to be black and white?
No. For paper applications the DFA recommends black and white photos but also accepts color. For Passport Online the photo must be in color, and the passport itself prints it in black and white. PhotoForPass provides color files and a color print sheet.
How many photos do I need for an Irish passport?
Passport Online needs 1 digital photo. A paper application needs 4 identical printed photos. Your witness signs and stamps 2 of them and writes the form number on them. A PhotoForPass 4 x 6 print sheet holds 8 photos at 35 x 45 mm, so one sheet covers a paper application.
What background color does an Irish passport photo need?
An Irish passport photo needs a completely plain light gray, white or cream background with enough contrast to your face and hair. There should be no objects such as door panels or plants, and no shadows. A plain light wall in a room with soft window light usually works well.
How do I take an Irish passport photo of a baby?
Lay the baby on a plain white surface and take the photo from above, holding the phone parallel to the face. No hands or arms can be visible, and no soother or pacifier. Passport Online also offers a cropping tool for children aged 0 to 36 months, which helps with framing.
What if the Passport Service rejects my photo?
The Passport Service will ask for a new photo, which can delay your application. Final acceptance is always up to the Passport Service. If a PhotoForPass photo is rejected, you can make a new one with one of your 3 free redos, or claim a full refund under our 14-day money-back guarantee.
