The photo you upload matters more than anything else. Templates handle the light, setting and styling, but faces can only be as clear as the original.

• Faces large and sharp. A photo taken from a few feet away beats a wide shot across a room or a park.
• Soft, even light. Window light or open shade works best. Avoid harsh midday sun, strong backlight and dim evening shots.
• Facing the camera. Profiles and turned heads are harder to keep recognizable.
• Nothing covering the face. No sunglasses, hats over the eyes, masks or hands in front of faces.
• Everyone fully in frame. Nobody hidden behind another person or cut off at the edge.
• No heavy filters. Beauty filters and strong color effects change faces before we even start.

Match the people to the template

Portraits keep the same people as your photo and add nobody else, except Santa in the Santa scenes. Use a photo of just the two of you for couple portraits, crop to one person for a solo memorial portrait, and include everyone you want in a family set. Small groups give the most faithful results.

Every portrait is checked automatically before it reaches you. The check compares each result with your photo and looks for the problems people notice first.

• Same people. Faces, skin tones, hair and ages match your photo, and the number of people stays the same.
• Natural faces. Realistic skin texture and expressions that still look like the people you know.
• Clean details. Hands with five fingers, tidy edges around hair and clothing, and no stray letters, logos or watermarks.

If something looks off, the portrait is redone automatically before delivery. You still have 3 free redos per order if a result does not feel right to you, because you know these faces best.

Honest notes

Your portraits are new images created from your photo, not shots from a real photoshoot. That is how one photo becomes several scenes. Small details such as jewelry, hair edges or clothing can differ from the original. The portraits are for keepsakes, gifts, frames and cards, never for passports or IDs. For an official photo, use our passport photo service instead.

Portraits download as high-resolution image files in a 4:5 shape, the classic portrait proportion. Cards come as print-ready 5x7 files.

• 8x10 and 16x20 prints match the 4:5 shape exactly, so nothing is cropped.
• 5x7 and 11x14 prints are a little narrower, so the print service trims the sides. An 11x14 print loses almost nothing.
• 4x6 prints trim the sides the most, so keep faces away from the edges.
• Greeting cards and Christmas photo cards include a print-ready 5x7 PDF, a 5x7 JPG and a share card for texts and social media. A 5x7 card fits a standard A7 envelope.
• Keepsake memorial portraits include print-ready files for frames, programs and services.

Print at home, at a CVS, Walgreens or Walmart photo counter, or with any online print service. For large prints such as 16x20, check the pixel size on your download page and ask your print service if it is enough for that size.

Personal photos deserve the same protection as passport photos. Your photo stays in your browser until you order.

After you order, it is encrypted in transit and at rest, used only to create your portraits, never sold, never shared for advertising and never used to train AI. Photos and results are deleted automatically after 90 days, and you can delete them sooner from My photos. Please upload only photos of people who are happy to be included, and of children you are the parent or guardian of.
